What books would you recommend on how to write and/or draw?
I've been getting really into watching my friends from all over the globe on deviantArt and d-mn it I really want to learn how to draw (starting with the anime-style stuff) and write (because it would look good on my resume for my film production-related career,) so here's what I'm looking for in those categories:
1. A list of common mistakes in writing (stuff like "how to avoid writing a Mary Sue." "How to avoid writing a "Chekov's Gun" into a story." "How to avoid writing a linear story.") Basically, the larger the list of things to avoid doing, the better.
2. Step-by-step stuff on how to draw, from the properly proportionate shapes that form the character to the details on shading and maybe backgrounds (stuff that I can digitally draw with inexpensive software like PhotoImpression, which I already have on my computer. None of that effective, albeit painfully expensive stuff like Adobe Illustrator.) Oh, and I can't forget about how I want to be able to draw emotion.
3. If it has "for Dummies" or "Complete Idiot's Guide" in the title, I wouldn't mind. In fact, I would prefer it. Whatever it is, t needs to be in plain, simple English.
4. I would rather keep the prices below $20 per book. Paperbacks that are available on Amazon.com and/or eBay are preferred.
5. Reliable step-by-step tutorials on DeviantArt would be good, too, but I have no idea about where to begin.
If there's anything that I'm leaving out, be sure to include it in your answer so that I can revise my question.
What kind of harm can the SOPA Bill inflict?
I have recently heard about the SOPA bill that might pass tomorrow and if it does, people say the internt could be ruined. Does this mean that DeviantART could be affected by this? I don't want that site shut down because of it.
